Kissimmee, Fla. -- The fifth-ranked softball team beat John Carroll 2-1 and fell to Wartburg 8-5 Monday in the team's second day of competition at the Rebel Games.
In their first game of the day, Ithaca trailed John Carroll 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning. Senior outfielder Leigh Bonkowski (The Williams School/Mystic Conn.) led off the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second and scored on a single by junior left fielder Mel Chinigo (Norwich Free Academy/Norwich, Conn.). Chinigo scored later in the inning on a single by sophomore shortstop Erica Cutspec (Fort Plain/Fort Plain). Freshman pitcher Jessie Derbyshire (Upper Dublin/Dresher, Pa.) earned the win in relief. She threw three perfect innings with two stikeouts in her first collegiate appearance. Sophomore pitcher Nicole Cade (Beaverton/Portland, Ore.) made the start, allowing two hits and one run in four innings.
In the second game of the day, Wartburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the top of the fourth inning, but the Bombers used a three-run fourth to tie the game. Wartburg scored two more in the fifth inning and three in the seventh for the win. Cutspec went two-for-three with two RBI's. Sophomore pitcher Carly Myers (Claremont Secondary/Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) allowed five runs on five hits in five innings for her first loss of the season.
The Bombers continue play at the Rebel Games on Tuesday. They face Muskingum at 8:50 a.m. and Muhlenberg at 10:40 a.m.
